The BIGGEST Cause of Postpartum Health IssuesHi there Reader, You know the biggest cause of postpartum issues that most people do not want to talk about? ๐ NUTRIENT DEPLETION. ๐ It takes up so much energy and nutrients to create a child- and most women are starting their pregnancy journey in a deficit already. Women are shamed for daring to eat enough food, even during a time where their nutritional needs increase significantly, but then we praise them for running 5Ks, weightlifting, etc. >>Can we please make it more acceptable to praise women for EATING too? << Moving is great if it's something you love to do and have the energy for it, but you really need to replenish the nutrients lost with stress and exertion. The shame in toxic diet culture has spilled over to pregnancy for women, and it really needs to stop. STOP commenting on what other people are eating or not eating, unless it's actually constructive advice, not just "omg you're going to get fat!" FREAKING STOP IT. Staying nourished is hard during pregnancy, especially if you're dealing with nausea or worse issues like Hyperemesis gravidarum. This is why postpartum depletion is so common- some sources says it can take 7-10 years to heal from having ONE child, and many women are having several children in a short amount of time. โ The best ways to stay nourished while pregnant:
โ Let's work on shifting the way we talk to other people, and the way we view eating. Eating is essential to life- when you're telling a pregnant woman (who is likely experiencing a LOT of emotions about her body changing!) that she should eat less, what are you doing? Encouraging disordered eating and postpartum depletion. As I was writing this all out, I was like, "OMG it's toxic diet culture that causes postpartum issues!" The fear of "getting fat" keeps young girls and women in that diet cycle, and then once they get pregnant they often get shamed for eating, so they can never truly replenish themselves. Horrible! Women deserve better! โ
